KING KARMA
SIGNS DEAL WITH
Z RECORDS
KING KARMA
has signed with Europe’s Premier Hard Rock Record Label,
Z RECORDS.
The UK label believes that the band’s debut album, which will be released in
Europe on May 10th, is a sure-fire contender for
debut album of the year. The band is very excited about the Euro-deal and the
prospects of touring in Europe. The group is also hoping that this signing will
result in North American labels taking notice and keeping their eyes on the band
for possible future deals in Canada and the USA! |

We receive so many great new bands these days that sometimes it is overwhelming
just to try and keep up! It is very cool that we have that problem, but it
sometimes draws attention away from other great bands that have been listed on
the site for a long time. So, in an effort to right this wrong, we have decided
to dedicate May to featuring
Jim Jacobi, a veteran of the Independent music
scene! Having recently released a new recording entitled
Get Out!, he is
continuing a musical career that is now over 25 years in the making, and is
showing no signs of stopping!
Jim calls Lincoln, Nebraska home these days, though he truly has trekked all
over the country, bringing his unique sound to large and small venues alike. His
career started as a member of the pioneering punk band The Crap Detectors.
Their music wasn’t punk in the vein of modern artists like Blink 182 or Green
Day; it was the true sound of underground music, even less commercially viable
than the work of The Sex Pistols or The Clash. The lyrical content was brash,
bold and angry, defying the status quo thinking of anything considered
mainstream. This band’s work caught the eye of artists who would later become
successful in the alternative market of the late 80’s and early 90’s.
After slugging it out for a time in Lincoln,
Jim moved to Dallas in the mid
80’s, and reformed the band. There, he played many major venues, and continued
to write and record new material. However, as the music scene in Dallas changed,
and many of the venues he had played began to change,
Jim decided to relocate to
Seattle. Here, he continued the trend of being unique and different. His time
there coincided with the huge surge in popularity of Grunge bands. As the
country fell head over heels in love with this new sound, many music fans in
Seattle were tiring of it, and The Crap Detectors became the alternative to
Alternative! Local university students began referring to his music as ‘Chunkarunkous’.
This term, they felt, described the all-out style of songs that
Jacobi was
writing at the time. His band lineup had changed nearly 10 times at this point,
too, and in the end, featured two female co-conspirators, Mindy Barret and
Andrea Burgess!
Seattle soon lost its attraction for
Jim, prompting him to return to the city
where it had all began. His move back to Lincoln also signaled the end of The
Crap Detectors, and the beginning of
Jim Jacobi and the Joe Jakimbi Band.
Teaming up with original Crap Detectors bassist Craig Kingery and drummer Dave
Robel, Jacobi continued to write music in the style that was uniquely his own.
Albums followed, including the debut album recorded in 1999 after only five
rehearsals together. Subsequent records (I’m Datin’ Satan, recorded in 2002, and
Get Out!, recorded in 2003) show
Jim’s dedication to a couple of different
things: First, to using the best recording equipment and techniques available to
him in the modern era, so that he is able to produce the truest “Jacobi” sound.
Second, his work shows a dedication to making sure that his original work of the
past is highlighted, so that fans can see where he has come from, and what fuels
the fire of his creativity. In fact, in 2001, he released an anthology of tunes
from the old Crap Detector days, with the hope of creating a musical collage
that would be indicative of his work as an artist. He continues today to create
new music, all with his own unique style and dedication to preserving the
rebellious attitude and sound of Rock and Roll. He is one of a very few artists
that I look to today, Commercial or Independent, to maintain a focus on the raw
energy and brash attitude that really is Rock and Roll. When Rock begins to
stray too far from its raw roots, thankfully there are artists like
Jim who
remind us of what the music should sound like!
Jacobi
released
Get Out! this past December at Lincoln’s Zoo Bar. Several members
of Lincoln’s music scene who had participated in the studio work on the album
joined the Joe Jakimbi band to celebrate the album’s release.
Jim continues to
be creative, painting and writing music, hoping to put together material that he
will eventually record. His music career has been uniquely his own, as he has
written the songs, done album cover art, and promoted and sold his own albums.
Taking a look at his discography will show you that he hasn’t taken time out
over the last 25 years to relax – he’s had something in the works nearly every
year, and hasn’t been forced in any way to bend or compromise his artistic
vision. He hasn’t achieved stellar fame or made millions with his art, but in
some senses I really think he would shun those things, especially fame, so that
he could maintain the creative control in his musical releases.
During the month of May, many people memorialize loved ones that have passed
from this life; whether they be victims of war or victims of battles with old
age or disease, we usually take time to remember their passing, and to think
about the ways that they enriched our lives. I’m not trying to be overly
melodramatic, but I do think that this month is a good time to celebrate the
career of a man that is still making great music! The only difference is that
Jim Jacobi is very much alive! This Feature then, will serve two roles; it will
honor the work that he has done in the past, and also focus attention on the
creativity he is capable of! To get a full sense of all that he has accomplished
during his career, make sure you check out his web site. There you will see his
full discography, history, and the paintings he has done. In fact, if you
collect art, be sure to see
his paintings, and ask him about purchasing one! He
will be having a show this month at
Adventures in Art,
6001 Maple Street Omaha, NE and in the Avenue Gallery in June at 4916
Underwood Ave, Omaha, NE.
Many thanks go to
Jim Jacobi
for being MWB’s truest punk rocker! In a bizarre
way, he is an example for America’s Youth, encouraging them to avoid the path of
least resistance, and to be true to themselves. With any hope, Rock and Roll
will continue to shock and be outrageous in the 21st Century, thanks to the
history and work of artists like
Jim Jacobi!
