NEWSLETTER

November 2003 Newsletter from Midwestbands.com!

Hey, Everybody!

October is now history, and we are staring the end of the year right in the face!  This time of year always flies by, and with the holidays coming up, will be one of the busiest times for all of us!  Here at MidwestBands.com, we hope to provide great music and info about independent bands and musicians, so that in the really hectic time, you’ll have a great diversion!

I want to thank Transient Frank for being our Featured Band in October!  The last day of the month was their most hectic, as they did the Frank[enstein] Psychedelic Circus at Beatnik’s in Marion, IN!  When we get reports of how the evening went, we’ll pass the info on to you!  I hope that all of you got a chance to learn about the band, and hear their music.  In my opinion, they are one of the best Jam bands in the State of Indiana!  If you didn’t check them out, make sure you do soon at http://www.midwestbands.com/bandpage.php3?id=494!

This month’s featured band is Switchback7, a band that has existed in Denver’s local scene for over 8 years; just recently, though; they’ve solidified their lineup, started a big publicity campaign, and released a full-length CD!  All of the struggles of the past few years are finally culminating in success for them, and we salute them for their tenacity, their determination, and their hard work!  If you don’t know the band, get to know them by going to http://www.midwestbands.com and reading the article on the home page!  If you want to hear their music, you can listen to selected clips from their new CD, and you can also enter our monthly contest!  You might win your very own copy of their CD Scissor Fight!

I also want to take the time to thank everyone who expressed their sympathy and concern for the bands/artists that I mentioned in our last newsletter!  The members of NewCleaR included a note to everyone that you can read below; also, everyone involved in the benefit for Brian Honeycutt that happened on October 30th, and the members of the band Thrust passed along their gratitude to share with you!  Hopefully, we will have made a difference in these people’s lives!  Where you can, continue to provide support and encouragement to these folks!

One more thing before I go: We have been making some improvements, slowly but surely, to the site!  The biggest changes that we’ve accomplished so far involve the home page, and our band listing.  We have had a lot of complaints about our old band listing not working, and being hard to navigate, so we decided to revamp it!  If you have a chance, go to http://www.midwestbands.com/bandlistframe.htm and check it out!  Hopefully it will be much easier to use!  We have also made changes to the navigation on the home page, and tried to streamline the articles a bit.  If you have suggestions or comments, be sure to let us know!  We appreciate your input!  More changes are coming, and we’ll be sure to let you know as we improve things!

Have a great month!  I wish all of you much success, much peace, and much happiness!  Keep on keeping on, and for some of you, we’ll see you at the Midwest Entertainment Industry Conference in Lexington, KY November 13th-15th!

Part One of Two Part Article on “The Internet and the Music Industry by Nick Combs of Telemetric

This month, we are going to include Part One of a Two-Part article written for us by Nick Combs, the drummer for Telemetric (
http://www.midwestbands.com/bandpage.php3?id=728), one of the bands here on MWB.  They are a band that has benefited greatly by using the power of the Internet, and I think that you’ll find some really cool stuff in his article!  Without further ado, here it is!

When I first talked to Mark and Jen about writing an article for their newsletter, my initial reaction was, "Why should I do it? I don't know jack about the Internet and music."

Then I realized that nobody else did either.

The music industry has spent the last several years trying to figure out this giant magical mystery that is The Great And All-Powerful Internet. The labels are trying to figure out how to make money off of it, musicians are trying to figure out how to get heard, and Joe Schmo just wants the latest Blink-182 single without dropping a brand new pink and green bill on it. The internet is the single most interesting and terrifying thing to ever occur to the music industry. It is at once the grand heralding of the underdog's arrival and the death knoll for the traditional marketing and concepts that have supported the industry for the last 100 years. It's also a revolutionary way to create music.

Whole studio sessions are done over the internet. Producer A can now record an entire album with Artist A without ever having met each other face to face, in real-time, from the first note to the final mastering. It's saved people millions of dollars on studio time because, let's face it, it's much easier and cheaper to have somebody throw down a bass line in their home studio and e-mail you the file than it is to take the time to rent studio time, find a musician locally, lug all the gear in, set-up, record and do everything all at once. It's also given the small guys (read: US) the flexibility and opportunity to take the time to record a project that until recently had been reserved for people who could afford to block out massive amounts of studio time.

My band, Telemetric, wrote our entire album online. We wrote our first three songs without even meeting face to face. We all met online through a local website for music and decided to start a band. Songwriting went faster then any other band I've ever been a part of. Joe, our guitar player, could lay down an entire song of instrumental tracks with a drum machine and then e-mail them over to Steve, our singer, who could lay down his vocal tracks and mix them down from there. This worked very well, because the song was already in digital form, so we could all burn CD's of the latest songs and listen to them to tweak them or practice our parts at home. As a result, the first time we ever rehearsed together, we all came in knowing every note by heart. This also gave us a great idea of what the finished product would sound like, so when it came time to do our album, we already knew what worked well for what song and what sounds we wanted. The only time we even stepped inside a studio was the 6 hours to track the drums. Every thing else we did ourselves, at home, and online.

The other great benefit of doing things this way is we had promo material from day one. As soon as a song was finished being written, we could throw it up on our website for people to listen to. This kept fresh music in people's ears and, we think, was an awesome way for the average person to listen to a song evolve. Needless to say, the first demo's and MP3's sound very different from the way the songs do now, but it's still great to go back and listen to the first stuff we threw up on the internet and go, "People actually listened to this crap? What the heck were we thinking....."

This brings what is probably the single greatest thing about the internet and for you and me, the indie artist. Promotion…

PART TWO

Promotion is where the true power of the Internet lies. You probably already realize this since you're on MidwestBands.com, but if you really want to be amazed, do a Google search for "free music". Now, think:  even if your music is only on A QUARTER of the sites you find, how many people's ears will you reach?

Pretty mind blowing huh?

The Internet is becoming THE way people find and listen to music. MP3's quite obviously aren't going anywhere, so instead of running terrified of them (*waves to the RIAA*), we need to love this technology and milk it for everything it's worth. Is there any reason why your mp3 album samples can't be downloaded by whoever wants them? No! I'm a firm believer in people giving away samples of their music. After all, you DO want to be heard right? More and more artists are releasing singles in mp3; one of the best examples of how to keep people wanting more. Pick your best song; the one everybody comes up to you after a show and says "I LOVE that song!!" Throw it up on your website and just watch what happens.

If you've already done this, Congratulations! You're ahead of thousands of people. The next step is online promotion.

There are HUNDREDS of sites and as many different ways to promo your music online! In fact, there’s enough information to fill 900 more newsletters, so I'm not even going to go into it, other then to say put your music anywhere and everywhere you can. The whole point is to get more ears wrapped around your songs, so what do you have to lose?

Finding artists is the other fun side of Internet promotion! If you want a poster boy, look at Jason Mraz. Regardless of whether or not you like his music, the man was MADE online. The Internet is an incredible way to find music you'll never hear on the radio, and the place to buy hard-to-find and sparsely distributed albums. Because, c'mon! You WANNA be the music guy that other people go to to find out who's going to be big next!  You WANNA be the guy whose entire CD case is filled with bands people have never heard of, but you can sing every lyric to! C'mon, you KNOW you want to!

Anyway, I hope I've gotten you a bit excited about the future of the internet and some of the possibilities of it. I know I've barely even poked at the surface, but spend a weekend doing your research and you'll be astounded, blown-away, vaporized, and dissipated at what you discover about online music and how you can promote your band.

By the way, go look up Brian Vanderark and Dredg if you haven't done so already. Both albums will change your life!

Scheme, Scam, Promote.

Songs played on MWB Radio being charted at Radiowave!
We have signed up with a company called RadioWave to provide that site with information on the songs that we are playing on MWB Radio!  Basically, what this means for us is that the songs being played on our radio station are being tracked, and each spin counts in their music charts!  The Mojo Gurus, a band that recently signed up with us, promoted their song “Race With the Devil” to several Internet radio stations this summer, and in a very short time pushed the song all the way to the top of the Hot 100 and Rock charts!  Internet radio is a new medium on the horizon that many bands are using to get their music heard!   We are striving to play the best music in the Midwest on our station, and as such get your music heard!  If you haven’t submitted music for consideration of airplay on MWB Radio, what are you waiting for?  In the next month, we are going to be doing a lot of revamping and a lot of work with the radio station, and we hope to make it an attractive place for you to submit your music and to have it heard!!  Also, if you haven’t done so, make sure you PLEASE link the radio station on your sites!  The more people that know about it, the better it is for all of us!  With 900 plus bands in our listings, we can go a long way in promoting the station if all of you let your fans know about this great resource!  We are doing advertising now in the new edition of the Indie Bible, and are looking to other opportunities to let people know!  We want people all over the world to hear YOUR music!  Help us to push MWB Radio to the top of the heap!
